With August coming to an end, we are edging closer and closer to the release date of Vengeance Waits, a standalone novel that also happens to be the next iteration in The Fables of Chaos. This book is exciting for me- it is my first queer protagonist, and occurs on a far smaller scale than the other books in the series.

It's been an interesting road. The main character and story of Vengeance Waits were originally supposed to be one of the new settings introduced in Tears of the Moon. However, in order to bring justice to the protagonist, Tristan, and his journey of loss, betrayal, and revenge, I knew I needed to give him a standalone. My initial plan for a novella turned into a full-length book as the story evolved and the characters developed. I also changed the final act as I was writing it, resulting in (I hope) a better conclusion than what I had initially planned.

I'm really proud of this book. It's raw, unflinching, and came from all the pent-up grief and rage I have lived with all my life caused by abusers, backstabbers, and ex-lovers. As a result, it was a rather therapeutic experience to write, and I hope it will be somewhat cathartic to read as well.

While it still fits the overarching grimdark theme seen in my other books, Jaedus has a number of unique qualities that set it apart from the other places we have visited. The five Oligarchs rule with an iron fist, slavery and poverty are rampant, and the city's advanced industry is on the verge of revolution. It is in this world where we find our protagonist, Tristan sin-Morel- a renowned courtesan forced down a destructive path of vengeance after his world is flipped upside down.
